SAURAV WINS 2 BRONZE MEDALS AT GUANGZHOU ASIAN GAMES

Saurav won an individual and team bronze medal for India at the just concluded Asian Games in Guangzhou, China. In the individual event, he had a bye in the 1st round before he beat Altemimi Ammar of Kuwait 3-0 (11-4, 11-4, 11-5) in convincing fashion. Next up, he played his fellow countryman, Siddharth Suchde in the quarterfinals. Saurav produced an accomplished performance to win 3-0 (11- 6, 11-6, 11-7) to win, but the scores do not reflect the intensity of the match. In the semi-finals, Saurav came up against Mohammad Azlan Iskandar (WR 15) of Malaysia. It arguably turned out to be the best match of the event, but unfortunately Saurav came out on the losing side. He lost 3-1 (11-5, 6-11, 11-5, 12-10) in a match of high quality. As a result, Saurav had to settle for a Bronze medal! Azlan went on to win the Gold medal in the individual event.

As far as the team event went, it was a story of so close, yet so far for the men's team in Guangzhou. India played Malaysia in the pool stages to decide who would top the pool and thereby get an easier route to the finals. It turned out be a very close tie and had both teams riding a real rollercoaster! Siddharth Suchde went on first for India and played some solid squash to go 2-0 up against Mohammad Nafizwan Adnan. It was looking good but Siddharth lost his focus a bit and he soon found himself playing a deciding 5th game. Unfortunately, he lost 11-9 in the 5th and Saurav went into his match against Mohammad Azlan Iskandar with India 1-0 down! However, that did not deter Saurav from producing a brilliant performance and beating Azlan 3-1 and restoring parity for India. Azlan was probably feeling a bit low physically after his exertions in the individual event and Saurav capitalised. Harinder Pal Singh Sandhu played the deciding match against Ivan Yuen. They have played numerous close matches over the years and this one turned out no different. Eventually, Harinder had match ball at 10-9 in the 5th game but couldn't convert. Ivan kept his nerve to close out the match 12-10 and effectively put Malaysia into the finals. The entire Indian team was despondent. They couldn't believe how close they had come to causing such an upset, but were sorely disappointed to lose in the end. As a result of the loss to Malaysia, India came 2nd in their pool and had to play Pakistan in the semi finals the next day. Siddharth Suchde and Saurav produced spirited performances but both went down 3-1 to their counterparts. The exertions during the week may have finally taken a toll on them and they just didn�t have enough left in the tank. India had to be satisfied with a Bronze medal in the team event too!
